Lyric update:

Lyric was in the ER for two days this weekend due to the re-accuring breathing issues. We had a follow up visit yesterday. The Dr.'s decided that it was no longer best to treat the symptoms of these issues and put her life at risk, but to start preventative care. Lyric will now have to take a medecine twice a day in perpetuity. They compare these issues to severe asthma event though she is not diagnosed with it. She is fine now and on the new treatment.

Results from her Cancer Clinic visit, heart exam and Survivorship visit last week came in. Good news! Lyrics blood counts look great. She is still considered in a partial remission. Her full heart exam test results look great also. Again, Lyric has to have these heart tests yearly for life since one of the chemo's has a high chance of causing serious heart damage down the road. There was an issue whether Lyric had the genetic mutation for Factor Five which pre-desposes her to blood clotting. During her chemo treatment, we were told she had it. Then some months later we were told it subsided. This has always bothered me and I know its important to know for sure either way. I asked the Survivorship Dr. to order DNA testing to determine the truth. It turns out that Lyric does, in fact, have the Factor Five mutation. She is borderline which may explain why they thought it subsided before. Of course this is important information that Lyric will carry for life and something people need to know in case she is ever bed ridden, injured, has surgery, takes birth control and a gambit of other reasons.

All and all things look good and I can not tell you how much your prayers and support for Lyric mean. She will always be my baby. Lyric will have her next visit to the Vanderbilt Cancer Clinic in July and hopefully her last in Jan of 2014 where I am praying they finally declare her in full remission. In Jan she will also have her next Survivorship visit and heart exam. She will continue these visits for life. Thank you all.

Rising Country Artist John Austin McDaniel Joins the July 26th Lyrics for Lyric Show, Hosted by the Award Winning Stylist/ Musician Mark Newton

Mark Newton, Lyrics for Lyric show host, is proud to announce the addition of rising Country Artist John Austin McDaniel to the July 26th Lyrics for Lyric show.

John Austin McDaniel has been performing on stage since the age of five when he asked his father, Buddy McDaniel, to let him sing onstage with his band. At age nine he opened for Grand Ole Opry stars Bill Monroe, Little Jimmy Dickens, Bill Anderson, Ray Price, Kitty Wells, and personal favorite, Merle Haggard. At age 14, John entered the first annual Loretta Lynn Talent Search alongside future country star Jessica Andrews and won.
During that period of time, John Austin also performed guest appearances at the Renfroe Valley Barn Dance in Renfroe Valley, Kentucky; renowned as a launching pad for many current rising stars such as Troy Gentry of the popular multi-platinum selling country band Montgomery-Gentry.
In 2004, McDaniel hired an all-star ensemble of musicians including top-sought keyboardist and studio pioneer Hargus "Pig" Robbins, CMA and ACM Instrumentalist of the year harmonica player Charlie McCoy, and Wayne Ross, founder of powerhouse southern rock blues band "Barefoot Jerry" to help master his album “Country as Cornbread”.

The July 26th Lyrics for Lyric show will be the eighth installment of the on-going concert series presented by Roosters TX Style BBQ & Steakhouse, located at 123 12th Avenue North, Nashville, TN. 37203, hosted by Mark Newton, IBMA Award winning Stylist/ Musician and one of today's most respected interpreters of bluegrass music. Each month is jam packed with Nashville's best established talent in the Country, Bluegrass, Americana and Roots genres to benefit two year old Lyric Alana Frizzell (offset costs incurred while living at Vanderbilt Children's Hospital) whom was diagnosed with a rare, aggressive form of Leukemia at ten months old. After spending 6 months undergoing harsh chemo treatments at the Vanderbilt Children’s Hospital, Lyric is now in what’s called a “partial remission”, which simply means she has responded well to the chosen chemo treatment. She now frequents the Vanderbilt Cancer Clinic on a monthly basis and will do so for the next 3 and ½ years. If she can reach the 5 year mark without a relapse, she will be declared in full remission. Past shows have featured such stars as Jamie Johnson, Marty Raybon, Carl Jackson, Trent Tomlinson, Claire Lynch, Cia Cheryholmes, Missy Raines, Larry Cordle, Jerry Salley, The Roys, Whitney Duncan, Michael Peterson, Whitney Duncan and Billy Yates. As the show has grown, so has the talent level and sponsorship support from companies such as TKL Cases, D’Addario Strings, Double E Promotions and Paige Capo.

The July 26th show will also feature such great artists as American Idol Alum Bo Bice, Dean Miller, Ken Mellons, Chris Caskey and Bedhed & Blondy.

Mark Newton, Lyrics for Lyric show host, is proud to announce the addition of TCM Recording Artist Chris Caskey to the July 26th Lyrics for Lyric show.

Chris started performing with his first band at the age of 11. After sending his demos to Nashville Producers, Publishers and Record Labels, he caught the ear of Bob Stegall at Jen Eri Lin Music Publishing and made the move to Nashville where he would eventually land an artist development deal with Mercury Records in 1998 but the deal would eventually be cut short. He continued to perform with various bands across KY and found himself being rediscovered nearly ten years later in August of 2009 by Nashville’s Artist to the Stars, Corey Frizzell.

Hit Songwriter Dean Miller, Member of Country Music Royalty, Joins the July 26th Lyrics for Lyric Show, Hosted by the Award Winning Mark Newton

Mark Newton, Lyrics for Lyric show host, is proud to announce the addition of Dean Miller, son of the legendary Roger Miller, to the July 26th Lyrics for Lyric show.

Fifteen years after he first showed up in Nashville with his guitar and began racking up songwriting credits on albums by Trace Adkins, George Jones and Terri Clark, Dean Miller has finally hit his own stride. It’s not that it took all this time to figure out how to make his music work. It did, however, take that long to find a situation in which his associates asked him not to compromise, but to simply be himself. The result is “Platinum”, an album that captures Miller’s unique balance of polar traits: optimism and sarcasm, confidence and vulnerability, musical aggression and analytical introspection. Writing nine of the 11 tracks, Miller has fashioned an extraordinarily honest album, one that grapples with relationships, identity, weakness, risk and vocational revenge.

“It’s exactly where I’m at in my life,” Miller notes, “because it’s the first time ever that somebody has said ‘Here’s the money, go fall on your face.’ So what you get on this album is exactly where I’m at—artistically and as a writer—everything.”

Good Report

Thank you to everyone who continues to pray for Lyric. It really means a lot. Lyric got a good report today! All her blood counts look great. So far so good. We don't have to go back to the cancer clinic for two months.

It was great to see old friends and familys today that went through this with us. I also heard the saddest news as a mother at the clinic spoke of her childs relapse and readmitance to the hospital. The child was given 9 to 12 months to live. It just breaks my heart to hear this. That could just as easily be Lyric. Thank the Lord she is on the right track so far.

On a another positive note. Lyric has been granted a Make A Wish and we will be going on an unbelievable disney trip in Sept. We will keep everyone updated on that.

Artist Corey Frizzell

She now recognizes where we are at and what they are about to do. And boy she puts up a fight. Even so, thank the lord, Lyric got a great report. Everything is looking positive. March 23rd Lyrics for Lyric Benefit Featuring Jamie Johnson of the Grammy Winning Group, the Grascals

The Nashville Music Guide Magazine and the Famed, Picks Nashville are proud to announce the March 23rd Lyrics for Lyric show, hosted by Award Winning, Stylist/ Musician, Mark Newton will be headlined by Grascals lead singer, Jamie Johnson and have a preshow jam packed with hit song writers.

March's Lyrics for Lyric will be the fith installment of the series of shows to benefit Lyric Alana Frizzell, whom was diagnosed with a rare, aggressive form of Leukemia at 10 months old, featuring such stars in the past as Ken Mellons, Trent Tomlinson, Michael Peterson, Whitney Duncan and Billy Yates.

The show will be hosted by IBMA Award winning Stylist/ Musician, Mark Newton, one of today's most respected interpreters of bluegrass music, whom has received acclaimed reviews for his 2006 Hillbilly Hemingway album. Mark is also great friends with featured artist and lead singer of the Grascals, Jamie Johnson, whom has had recent Billboard success with his song and video, "I Am Strong", which pays tribute to children suffering from cancer like Lyric.

On July 28th, 2009, at ten months old, Lyric Alana Frizzell, daughter of Crystal and Artist to the Stars, Corey Frizzell was diagnosed with an aggressive, rare form of Leukemia and was just hours from losing her life. Not only was it a parent's worst nightmare to hear the dreaded words "Cancer", but to soon find out that Lyric is the only documented case in history to have her form of Leukemia was unfathomable. She has endured six months of chemo, deadly infections and months of seclusion from family and friends in a protected, filtrated wing of the hospital for immune suppressed patients at the Vanderbilt Children's Hospital, Myelosuppression Unit.

Lyric is now celebrating being declared in a partial remission from the Leukemia but frequents the Vanderbilt Cancer Clinic monthly and will continue to do so for the next four years to monitor her immune system and blood counts. If she can avoid a relapse during this period, having the greatest chance for one during the next year, she will be declared in full remission.

Songwriters appearing throughout the night will be Bryant Meltzer, Cowboy Slim, Lee Akers, JW Combs, Adrian Mahan, Analissa Garrett, Jenae Cherry, Tony Boatwright Jr, Josh Beal, Rachael Johnson, Lance Carpenter, Arlos Smith, Mary Hartman, Tommy Sutherland, Doug McCormick, James Slater, Bernie Nelson, Eddie Heinzelman, Jamie Burke, Rachael Hester, Claire Dunn and Melody Guy. A portion of the night's proceeds will be donated to the Lyric Frizzell Fund, to offset the costs incurred during the two year olds cancer treatment at Vanderbilt Children's Hospital.

The Grascals are among the most beloved and acclaimed bands on today's bluegrass scene, having won SPBGMA's Bluegrass Band of the Year award in 2010, the International Bluegrass Music Association's Emerging Artist of the Year award in 2005 and earning its Entertainer of the Year honor in both 2006 and 2007.

The story behind the song… Jamie Johnson on "I Am Strong" Back in February of 2010 I made a trip with The Grascals to present a check to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital in Memphis TN, raised by The MACC Festival held in Columbus, Ohio each year and little did I know my life would change forever with this visit. I was nervous and a bit scared from the moment I walked through the front doors of the hospital, afraid of what I might see. I knew that St. Jude was a Children's Hospital where children are fighting the terrible disease of cancer. Having my beautiful son Cole Train who is now 2 years old, thoughts were constantly running through my head as I watched young parents and their little boy or girl fighting for their lives. Many times I fought back tears and I just wanted to give them a hug for encouragement. If you've never been to St. Jude, do yourself a favor and go see these great teams of doctors show their dedicated love and determination to find cures for this disease. And go see some of the strongest people (the children) you'll ever meet in your life!

And if it's still there, go see the wall of the alphabet where "I am Strong" was inspired. The Letter "S" stands for strong. I am more proud of this song than any other work I have created in my life and so thankful for getting to write it with my beautiful wife Susanne Mumpower-Johnson and our great friend Jenee Fleenor. To the children of St. Jude and any child fighting cancer anywhere in this world, The Grascals love you and pray for you every day! Thanks for showing us the real meaning of "Strong"! - Jamie Johnson

Also Joining the Lyrics for Lyric benefit, starting in March, will be two great world class companies as regular sponsors. Results Are In

We finally got a call from the Dr. about Lyrics blood tests and heart exam and the results are great. Everything looks good this month including her first heart exam. Lyric will have to have a heart exam every year for the rest of her life since one of the chemos she had is so serious, a person can only have it once in their lifetime, but it has a high chance of causing heart damage later on. Thank the lord her first exam looks good. Choosing to allow her to have that particular chemo was a tough decision but when your facing what we were facing we wanted to try anything.

Please continue to keep Lyric and our family in your prayers since we still have a long road ahead of us. Thank you.

Jan Checkup & One Year Visit

Today we are visiting the Vanderbilt Cancer Clinic for Lyric's Jan checkup. It also happens to be her one year checkup since we have been home. This is an important visit. We were told when we finished chemo that the next two years would have the highest chance of a relapse and now we have made it to the one year mark with great results.

We are one step closer to the five year mark when they will declare her full remission. Thank you to all who trully supported us and please continue to pray for Lyric and our family as we continue this journey.

On top of Lyric having to have her checkup she is sick for the first time in a long time with a deep cough and sore throat. We will have to have that looked at also.

The last visit was the first time Lyric really new what was going to happen when we got to the clinic before we even arrived and she was not happy (Giving blood). It is the hardest thing for a daddy to watch you children go through things you know are for the best but hurt them so. It breaks my heart. I know she will throw a fit when we take her to the blood draw room this time.

I will give an update later after we get results.

December Lyrics for Lyric Featuring Country Star, Trent Tomlinson

If you missed November’s Lyrics for Lyric hit songwriter show, featuring Country/ Bluegrass Star, Ken Mellons then you really missed out. But you have another opportunity to catch a great show for a good cause on Wednesday December 8th when Singer/ Songwriter, Tony Boatwright, Jr. will be presenting Lyrics for Lyric, in association with Picks Nashville and Nashville Music Guide to benefit Lyric Alana Frizzell, featuring Country Star, Trent Tomlinson.

Last month’s show had Picks Nashville packed with fans, some all the way from Canada to see many of Nashville’s hit songwriters and The Jukebox Junkie, Ken Mellons. Some of the writers included Stan Webb (I’m From the Country – Tracy Byrd), Danny Wells (Check Yes or No - George Strait), Gary Hannan (Tequila Makes her Clothes Fall Off – Joe Nichols), Bernie Nelson (Daddy Never Was The Cadillac Kind – Confederate Railroad) and Rich Fagan (Sold – John Michael Montgomery).

The night was topped off when Ken Mellons took the spotlight with surprise guests, The Roys, two-time ICM Duo of the Year winners and sang “ I’ll Fly Away”, getting the whole crowd to join in.

Picks Nashville, Music Row’s historical club located at 1407 Division St., Nashville TN, 37203, is ready to do it again! The Decemaber 8th show will be jam packed with Nashville talent, showcasing rising songwriters in the round starting at 6pm and hit songwriters beginning at 8pm, featuring Country Star, Trent Tomlinson (One Wing In The Fire).

Songwriters appearing throughout the night will be Bryant Meltzer, Adam Fountain, Cowboy Slim, Jack Friesby, Jake Donelson, Patrick Devine, James Iann, Kevin So, Joe Hilton, David Ray, Mary Hartman, Mark Steven Jones, Joel Shewmake, Trent Jeffcoat, Pam Belford, Jill Wood, Amanda Hunt Taylor, Jennifer Adan, Dustin Evans, Arlos Smith, Aaron Goodvin, Clare Dunn, Alecia Arnall, Tamera Rey Fosdick and Heidi Raye. A portion of the nights proceeds will be donated to the Lyric Frizzell Fund, to offset the costs incurred during the two year olds cancer treatment at Vanderbilt Children’s Hospital.

On July 28th, 2009, at ten months old, Lyric Alana Frizzell, daughter of Crystal and Artist to the Stars, Corey Frizzell was diagnosed with an aggressive, rare form of Leukemia and was just hours from losing her life. Not only was it a parent’s worst nightmare to hear the dreaded words “Cancer”, but to soon find out that Lyric is the only documented case in history to have her form of Leukemia was unfathomable. She has endured six months of chemo, deadly infections and months of seclusion from family and friends in a protected, filtrated wing of the hospital for immune suppressed patients at the Vanderbilt Children’s Hospital, Myelosuppression Unit.

Lyric is now celebrating being declared in a partial remission from the Leukemia but frequents the Vanderbilt Cancer Clinic monthly and will continue to do so for the next four years to monitor her immune system and blood counts. If she can avoid a relapse during this period, having the greatest chance for one during the next year and a half, she will be declared in full remission. She is, in fact, scheduled for her December checkup the day before the show on the 7th. This is always a nervous time for the Frizzell family, waiting on blood counts and hoping for the best. Please continue to keep Lyric and family in your thoughts and prayers.

Trent Tomlinson, the son of Cleveland Cavalier basket ball star, rose to fame, not as a star athelete but as a Country Star. Trent burst onto the Country Music scene after signing with Lyric Street Records with his debut album, Country Is My Rock in 2006 producing three Top 40 singles on the U.S. Billboard Hot Country Songs charts including “Drunker Than Me“, “One Wing in the Fire” and “Just Might Have Her Radio On“.

Tomlinson also co-wrote “Missing Missouri” on Sara Evans’ 2005 album Real Fine Place, and “Why Can’t I Leave Her Alone” on George Strait’s 2006 album It Just Comes Natural.

“We are very excited to have someone like Ken Mellons as our featured artist. This is for a great cause and should be a very entertaining night.” – Wade Johnson

Ken Mellons’ childhood musical influences ran rich with the sound of the Appalachian Mountains where his appreciation for soulful harmonies and raw acoustic sounds, sounds that could only be found on his Dad’s Lester Flatt and Earl Scruggs records, made an impression Ken would carry with him to Nashville when his father Charles took a position at the “The Tennessean” newspaper, moving the family west to “Music City USA.”
At the time the Mellons’ had no idea that their little boy would grow up to have a giant sized baritone voice that would burst onto the country music scene when Ken signed his first record deal in 1992 with Sony Music selling over 500,000 copies of his debut album, which boasted the radio hits “Jukebox Junkie,” and “I Can Bring Her Back.”.

Although Ken garnered commercial success in the country music field, he recently came full circle releasing his first Bluegrass album Rural Route, featuring the single Tennessee Ridge Runner with special guest appearances by Sonya Isaacs and Vince Gill.

Ken is back where he began and couldn’t be happier “Bluegrass has always been a part of my life, ever since I was a kid. In a way bluegrass music for me is like opening an old photo album full of memories from my childhood. I can’t wait to develop the next roll of pictures and add them to my album.” – Ken Mellons

Interesting News

Well we finally finished up at the Cancer Clinic and received news that I am not sure what to make of. Lyric's counts came back with no abnormal cells but her white blood cells are high for the first time since we finished chemo. We will be watching her close and test again in a few weeks. The Dr. said there's a chance she might be fighting a cold or somthing but she hasn't shown any signs of anything. Please continue to pray for lyric and our family for continued healing. Thanks.

Lyric was very unhappy with giving blood. The nurse had to do it three times to get what she needed. Now it goes off to the lab to check her counts and we wait. Please pray for great results.

Lyric & Hayden Win Big at the Dickson County Fairest of the Fair!

We had a great time this weekend at the Dickson County Fair, Fairest of the Fair Pageant. Both girls did a great job and surprisingly had a blast. They just loved showing off their new princess dresses and fancy shoes.

I walked both girls out on the stage to pose for the crowd.
Our little Hayden, who is usually pretty shy when it comes to crowds, let all her personality come out. She is used to daddy taking so many photos at home that she takes direction real well. I just told her to keep a big smile and wave the whole time we were out on the stage. I told her to blow a kiss to the crowd every time we stopped and she did exactly that winning the 36 - 47 Month Division Fairest of the Fair title against 17 other beauties!

She was on cloud nine with her princes crown and trophy.

This was a first time pageant experience for both girls so we didn't know what to expect. We really didn't care if either girl won. This was more about celebrating life with our family after the terrible year we have had.

Lyric looked beautiful in her burgundy dress and diamond crested shoes. She also couldn't wait to get on stage and show off those shoes, however I couldn't get her to smile or wave. She just went out and stared at everyone. With not showing much personality, Lyric still won 4th place in the 11-23 Month Fairest of the Fair Division out of 18 little girls.

We would also like to thank Perry & Vikki Edge of the leading gospel promotional compay, Double E Promotions for the sponsorship. Or as Hayden likes to call them, her "Popi & Mi Mi". It really meant a lot. For more info on Double E Promotions, please visit www.doubleepromotions.com

Hayden & Lyric to be in the Dickson County Fair!

Crystal and I have decided to enter Hayden and Lyric into the 2010 Dickson County Fair Pageant.
Win, loose or draw, we know how beautiful our girls are. This is more about celebrating where we are now after the toughest year a family could ever have. Everyone knows what Lyric has been through but it has effected Hayden also.
We had the girls head shots taken today by Mary at Mary Davidson Photography in Dickson TN. They will have their photos in the upcoming paper.

The girls are both being sponsored by leading Country & Gospel Promotional Company, Double E Promotions. You can view their website at www.doubleepromotions.com

Thank You to Chuck Navasky and "One Less Tear"

We would like to thank Chuck Navasky, founder of the "One Less Tear" project for sending a package of really cool stuff to Lyric.

"One Less Tear" is a cancer fighting music project with some of the biggest names in music, sports, entertainment, business, and just about every walk of life that could come to mind... together standing united as brothers and sisters in the fight against CANCER.

"In August of 1999, my life changed when I was diagnosed with a stage 1 cancerous tumor on my false vocal cord. After 3 surgeries my doctors told me I was just fine. Although I asked them to treat me with radiation and chemo, they looked at me like I was the dumbest man on earth. And being one of the 'dumbest men' on earth, I listened to them... and took no treatments."

"8 months later - the doctors found a stage 3 "Un-Operable" Tumor on my true vocal cord, it was the size of a nickel. At this point - the team of specialists realized that maybe they should have listened to one of the 'dumbest men" on earth."

"Very few of them could look me in the eye as I walked out of the hospital that day. They also told me my chances of talking again were slim, and signing was absolutely out of the question."

God Bless You,

Chuck Navasky
